From Centre for semiconductor industry development in Sanand and Dholera SIR
Mona Khandhar, Principal Secretary of the Science & Technology Department, highlighted Gujarat’s vision to develop a robust and sustainable semiconductor and electronics ecosystem in the Sanand and Dholera SIR regions within the next six years. She noted that of the five semiconductor projects approved under the Semicon India programme, four are being established in Gujarat.
A chip packaging cluster is under development in GIDC Sanand, with significant projects by Micron Technology Inc., CG Semi, and Kaynes Semicon. Additionally, India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication unit is being set up in Dholera SIR by TATA Electronics Pvt. Ltd. The state government is also engaging with ecosystem partners and potential investors to attract more manufacturing units to Gujarat, aiming to integrate the state into the global semiconductor supply chain.
To achieve this, the government is focusing on developing world-class industrial infrastructure, utilities, logistics, and security systems. Building a robust ecosystem of suppliers and addressing workforce development challenges are key priorities, requiring significant financial resources.
Specialized manufacturing clusters with plug-and-play facilities in Sanand and Dholera aim to enable companies to scale operations efficiently. The sector is expected to drive sustainable economic growth, boost Gujarat’s GDP, and position the state as a major player in semiconductor exports. Projected investments for these initiatives stand at ₹40,783 crore over six years, for which special grants have been requested from the national finance commission and the central government.
